Before Glendale
Post Cards, Photos and Paper

March 2 - June 29

By KP Yamada

The land that is now Glendale was inhabited by the Tongva before the Portola expedition established a permanent Spanish presence in 1769. Two years later, Mission San Gabriel was founded.

Jose Maria Verdugo, a soldier at the mission, received title to Rancho San Rafael in 1797. It was the second Spanish land grant made to an individual in California and survived until 1871, when it gave way to the establishment of the town of Glendale.

The exhibit, told thru documents, photos and postcards, is open to the public during Doctors House opening hours.
